The Isaac Bell House by McKim, Mead and White
"The Isaac Bell House is one of the exceptionally known examples of Shingle Style architecture in the United States. It combines elements of the English Arts & Crafts Movement philosophy, colonial American detailing, and features a Japanese-inspired open floor plan and bamboo-style porch columns. Interior features include inglenook fireplaces, natural rattan wall coverings, wall paneling and narrow-band wooden floors. At the time of its completion in 1883, the Isaac Bell House was revolutionary for its open plan and fusion of design elements from a variety of historical and exotic sources. The architects used many historic features from colonial America, Britain, Europe, and the Far East, but they were not dependent on historical references. The home was declared a national landmark in 1997."
